Heliopause Prelude Fri, 25 Jun 2010 16:00:00 GMT Having released their brilliant third album CLARITY IN DARKNESS just six months ago, underground progressive duo The Resonance Association (Daniel Vincent and Dominic Hemy) have been back in the studio to record some brand new material.
mrs.vee recordings are proud to present HELIOPAUSE PRELUDE, a 4-track download EP featuring two tracks from those sessions.
These tracks offer both new and old fans a tantalising glimpse of the duo's musical intentions as they begin the recording sessions for their keenly anticipated fourth album HELIOPAUSE.
Above, Beyond & Forever opens the EP with a frantic rush of drums and bass wrapped up in wall-to-wall guitars and tape loops. Taken from the duo's recent sessions, this track sees Dominic Hemy take lead guitar duties as the duo embrace the aggressive sound that developed during their recent series of UK live shows.
"... knowing that we only had short sets in which to grab people's interest, we soon realised that only a shock-and-awe approach would do: out went the long ambient jams and in came the riffs and harsh guitar sounds. Get in, rock out, and f*** off!" - Daniel Vincent
Two tracks from the CLARITY IN DARKNESS sessions follow. They were considered "too electronic" for the duo's previous album, and it's easy to understand why: Hope Falls' gentle clatter of beats and twisted electronics underpin a heavily processed guitar solo from Hemy, whereas Enabler's grimy drum loops, sub-bass and atonal guitar pulses identify the track as a distant relative of None More Evil from the duo's second album WE STILL HAVE THE STARS.
"For a long time, Hope Falls was going to open [Clarity In Darkness]. There's a great mix we have somewhere, where it segues into Dangerous Fantasist. I loved it, but I think I got overruled at some point!" - Daniel Vincent
In the title track the duo take an aggressive mix of distorted bass lines and primal drumming and add a swaggering guitar line that could've barged out of the Good Mixer in the headiest days of Cool Britannia - showing that guitarist Daniel Vincent still knows all of the best Brit Rock moves. The track concludes with the squall of tape feedback and wild theremin action. Job done.
"I'm proud of everything we've done so far: no compromises, no excuses, no apologies." - Dominic Hemy
Long-time collaborator Carl Glover's cover seems fitting: the space telescope offering us a peek into the future of this exciting and resolutely independent band. It seems as though The Resonance Association have travelled so far out that they may never return, however they have left their trail in the stars, and left it up to the rest of us to keep up.

| Clarity In Darkness reviews Mon, 18 Jan 2010 19:00:00 GMT Clarity In Darkness has been greeted with some great reviews so far:
The Music Fix "It does shredding, it does doom, it does prog and it does all of them spectacularly well. It's an album born of tremendous creativity that makes a distinct emotional connection throughout - even if sometimes those emotions may make you want to hide under a large cushion."
Terrorizer magazine "Fans of the Drone Zone will dig this ... a release that takes time to catch, but when it does it's impressive"
Rock-A-Rolla "Classic prog meets ambient meets drone meets industrial ... [Clarity In Darkness] definitely has its moments, strangely stuck in some parallel dimension between the 80s and the avant world of today"
DPRP "I can think of no room for improvement from this awesome band. 10/10"
Big Distraction "Where The Resonance Association go from here is anybody's guess ... they have produced a phenomenal work of art that will satisfy fans of the band and newcomers alike for a long time to come. Outstanding."
ondarock.it "full of really great ideas ... an impressive and visionary space ride" (translated from the original article in Italian)
Hippy Towers "What we have here is the band's finest work. Not just compositionally, though there's certainly plenty of variety on offer here; nor merely in terms of the production which is also the clearest and best-defined that the duo have enjoyed to date; but also in terms of honing their trademark sound to a fine point and also in that they have tried some interesting new variations on that sound"
Of course, as they say, you can't please everyone...
Mass Movement "There is no way to peg this into a category except maybe experimental"
InYourSpeakers.com "... so meek and dull it would put a sugar-buzzed child to sleep ... relentlessly long"
Clarity In Darkness is available now from Burning Shed (CD), Rough Trade (CD), Southern Records (CD), Norman Records (CD), Amazon (download), iTunes (download), eMusic (download) and Napster (download).
